The unit applies to analysing a trim design and making individual trims from traditional and non-traditional materials and components to compliment the overall millinery design.
Couture trims are identified as being complex trims that require dexterity and intricate material manipulation skills to construct. Hand and machine stitching, tooling, wiring and construction techniques are involved depending on the trim required and the materials and components used.
Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team-related activities.
The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices which may include:
environmental aspects associated with the use of millinery solvents and adhesives
OHS practices including hazard identification and control measures associated with the use of millinery solvents and adhesives
requirements prescribed by legislation, awards agreements and conditions of employment
standard operating procedures
work instructions
oral, written and visual communication
quality practices including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output
housekeeping
tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control, and recycling.
This unit requires the application of problem solving skills, initiative and enterprise to determine materials and processes required for trim, and planning and organising for the safe and effective application of trimming technology and operations. This unit also requires an ability to interpret millinery design and documentation and check quality outcomes.
This unit covers skills and knowledge to make unique trims for model and couture millinery.
